Highlights

The headline CPI showed an increase of 2.5 percent from March quarter 2021 to June quarter 2021.

The headline CPI also showed an annual increase of 3.3 percent from June quarter 2020 to June quarter 2021.

Facts

The major contributors to the increase in the June Quarter were the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Group, Clothing and Footwear Group, Miscellaneous Group, Transport Group and Alcohol Beverages, Tobacco and Betel-Nut.

 

Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Group (+4.8%)

The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Group Index increased by 4.0 percent in this quarter mainly due to the increase in prices of Fruits and Vegetables (+13.0%)

Clothing and Footwear Group (+3.7%)

The Clothing and Footwear Index increased by 3.7% percent in this quarter was mainly due to the increase in prices of Men’s wear (5.9%) and Women and Girls wear (+3.6%).

Miscellaneous Group (+3.4%)

The Miscellaneous Group Index increase by 3.4 percent this quarter showing an increase in Lae (+6.5%), Port Moresby (+4.1%), Goroka-Mt Hagen-Madang (+1.5%), Alotau-KimbeKokopo/Rabaul (+0.2%).

Transport Group (+3.1%)

The Transport Group Index increased by 3.1 percent this quarter due to increase in Fares (+7.0%) and prices for Fuel and Lubricants (+5.8%)

Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Betelnut Group (+3.1%)

The Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Betel-Nut Group Index increased by 3.1 percent this quarter due to increase in Prices for Betel-Nut and Mustard (+4.0%).

The Health Group 12 months to December Quarter 2020 increased by 21.5 percent.

Headline CPI

The headline CPI showed an increase of 2.5 percent from March quarter 2021 to June quarter 2021. The headline CPI also showed an annual increase of 3.3 percent from June quarter 2020 to June quarter 2021.
