Highlights

The headline CPI showed an increase of 1.7 percent from December quarter 2021 to March quarter 2022.

The headline CPI also showed an increase of 6.9 percent from March quarter 2021 to March quarter 2022.

Facts

The major contributors to the increase in the March Quarter were Education Group, Transport Group, Health Group, Household Equipment Group, Recreation Group and Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages Group

Education Group (+ 8.6%)

The Education Group Index increased by 8.6 percent in this quarter mainly due to the increase in Education Fees (+9.0%)

Transport Group (+5.9%)

The Transport Group Index increased by 5.9 percent this quarter due to increase in prices of Operations of transport (+13.8%) and Fares (+ 13.9%).

Health Group (+3.8%)

The Health Group Index increased by 3.8 percent in this quarter mainly due to the increase in prices of Medical Services (+4.2%).

Household Equipment Group (+3.6%)

The Household Equipment Group Index increased by 3.6 percent in this quarter mainly due to the increase in prices of Household Maintenance Goods (+4.7%).

Recreation Group (+2.4%)

The Recreation Group Index increased by 2.4 percent this quarter showing an increase in Lae (+ 13.6%) and less changes in, Port Moresby, Goroka-Mt-Hagen-Madang and Alotau-Kimbe Kokopo/ Rabaul

Food and Non-AlcohoIic Beverages Group (+ 1.9%)

The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Group Index increased by 1.9 percent in this quarter mainly due to the increase in prices of Oils and Fats (+10.6%).
