Micro Data Documentation Production for PNG Statistical System

The National Statistical Office in conjunction with Partnership for the Development of Statistics in the 21st Century (PARIS21) held a weeklong workshop from the 26th to 30th of October here in Port Moresby.

As part of the Accelerated Data Program, it was one of a series of capacity building workshops on digital Micro Data Documentation Production for PNG Statistical System which saw participants from the National Statistical Office, Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) Department of Health (NDoH) and the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC).

The program was facilitated by NSO officers from the Library and Information Services together with the Information and Technology branch.PARIS21 Coordinator for Asia and Pacific, Mrs. Gaye Parcon conducted the training for the participating government agencies.
The objective of the training was to improve proper documentation of micro data for proper and organized internal archiving to preserve institutional memory and enable internal and external users to better understand and use statistical products.

Towards the end of the workshop, certain issues were identified and recommendations put forward to the NSO Management to consider for improved micro data documentation and dissemination.

The National Statistician, Mr.Roko Koloma in his closing remarks challenged participants to apply to their work areas the knowledge learnt from the training. He encouraged participants to create a working relationship between the different agencies to share and enhance ideas in compiling data whether it be from surveys or administrative data. Participants were issued certificates at the end of the training. Meanwhile, the training coordinator, Mrs. Parcon indicated that PARIS21 will continue to provide technical support to PNG’s Statistical System.
