March Quarter 2017

In the March quarter of 2017 saw a minimal increase in the arrivals compared to the same quarter of 2016. A total of 48,919 persons arrived in Papua New Guinea compared to 48,568 in March quarter of 2016. Departures also increased in the March quarter of 2017. There was a 32.9 percent increase from the March quarter of 2016.

The March quarter “visitors” arrivals of 2017 were 32,359 which indicates, 0.9 percent increase compared to March quarter of
2016 which recorded 32,049 persons. Out of this total 13,834 came for employment, 7,870 came for business, 6,522 came for
holiday, and 4,133 came for other purposes.

Australia top the list with highest number of visitors in March quarter of 2017 with 15,697, followed by the Philippines with 3,663, China with 1,948, Other Oceania 1,376 and USA 1,309, and New Zealand 1,173 respectively, while all the other countries recorded below 1,000 visitors.

Port Moresby remains the major port of arrivals (by air) for both 2016 and 2017 March quarters with 47,095 and 48,151 respectively.

Arrivals through other ports were significantly less or no arrivals at all.

Finally visitors working in Professional, Technical levels accounted for 35.7 percent and 37.3 percent respectively for 2017 and
2016 quarters. Administration, Executive, Managerial people were the next highest number of visitors in the March quarter of
2017 and 2016 – 9,391 and 8,068 respectively.
