The Papua New Guinea National Statistics Office (NSO) prepares for this nation-wide undertaking

"The NSO will ensure that the 2011 Census of population and housing is conducted in July, 2011 and that it is carried out successfully, taking into account international recommendations and best practices in census undertaking."

The NSO is the agency in PNG with the responsibility (under the Statistical Services Act (1981)) for conducting the census. It is now a matter of urgency that the NSO must submit a proposal (currently in progress) to the National Executive Council (NEC) to conduct the next national census in the year 2010. This provides the NSO over a year lead up time for preparation.

The goal of the 2010 Census is to provide useful, relevant, reliable and timely information for the Government of Papua New Guinea. Such information must form an integral part of the national development planning process. Demographic and socio-economic factors must form the basis of the development process at all geographical levels.

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing was the fifth national census that was conducted successfully since independence. The outcome of this was a national achievement and has achieved several very important milestones including a wider census products developed in-house, which users found really useful. For the first time since independence, a single census form was applied to all sectors and geographical levels of the country. Data processing the results collected took about eight months when the preliminary results were published. Furthermore, the census basic tables were released early the following year.

Building on from the experiences on various stages of census operations gained during previous censuses, the NSO is determined to carry out this important project successfully and ensure that the results are relevant and made available to the public in a timely manner. As part of the NSO's preparation plan, it is envisaged that preliminary results would be released during the first quarter of 2011. The emphasis will be to provide a wide range of user friendly census products to meet the needs of key stakeholders and the general users.

A draft census proposal is currently in progress and once finalised will be submitted for approval by the government. As part its initial preparation the appointment of the 'Census Director' is crucial and will be a priority activity for the NSO to see established after the census budget is approved.

It is estimated that the overall cost for the 2011 of Population and Housing will be in the range of K125 to K130 million over the the three years census period.

Progress and developments regarding NSO's preparation for this upcoming census will be made available in this website.
