At the triennial Regional Meeting of Heads of Statistics (RMHS) in 2000, NSO representatives recommended  that SPC's Statistics Programme concentrate resources on assisting NSOs in strengthening their Internet presence, particularly with regard to disseminating key national data. This directive led to the Regional Pacific Information SysteM (PRISM) with funding from the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID).

The PNG National Statistics Office welcomes this initiative. It sees it as an opportunity that contributes to a better dissemination of its statistical outputs at national, regional and international audiences.

Through PRISM, the NSO now has its own website, developed by the NSO webmaster, Mr. Leslie Wongo. It is currently undergoing review and finalisation with assistance provided by the Mr. Raymond VUTI, manger for the PRISM project.

It is hoped that it will be online as soon as it is finalised.

The main purpose of the HIES (Household Income and Expenditure Survey) is to provide more up-to-date information about the average spending of urban Papua New Guinean households for use in determining the composition of the "basket of goods and services" to which the Consumer Price Index relates.

A secondary purpose is to obtain related information on income distribution, housing and other socio-economic conditions of national living in selected towns.

Previously, the Survey used to be called Household Expenditure Survey (HES).

The DHS 2006 for Morobe Province was launched on Wednesday 19th April (2006) in Lae by Mr. Abraham Masu the Acting Deputy National Statistician from the National Statistical Office.

This important survey will be very helpful in compiling data for formulation of national policies.
