POPULATION AND SOCIAL STATISTICS DIVISION

2000 National Census Branch

The Population and Social Statistics Division (PSSD) is the other operational division, which is responsible for planning, coordinating and conducting statistical surveys and censuses such as the national population census. Two operational branches and a research and development branch perform the activities if the division. Another branch was created in the 1998 organizational restructure to cater for additional responsibility of facilitating and coordinating activities of the 2000 National Population Census.

The division comprises of four branches which are Field Operations Branch, Compilation Branch, Research and Development Branch and the 2000 National Population Census Project Branch.   

FIELD OPERATIONS BRANCH

This Branch is responsible for coordinating field operations of the PSSD in close collaboration with counterparts in the provinces and other relevant bodies. This entails the preparation of relevant statistical forms, updating of provincial maps and planning of statistical activities undertaken in the provinces. A further activity of the branch is the regular production of relevant NSO publications by the technical section of the branch. 

COMPILATION BRANCH

The Compilation Branch is responsible for coordinating the collection, processing and compilation of statistics based on data obtained from international arrival and departure cards. The statistics produced (quarterly) through this process provide a crude, but important indicator for tourism and international migration.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT BRANCH

This Branch is responsible for planning, designing and developing materials to conduct relevant surveys and census that are coordinated by the division. The branch also provide secretariat role to the User Advisory Committee and the PCC conferences as well as conducting and analyzing pretests of the 2000 National Population Census questionnaire and other similar surveys and census. The branch is also responsible for developing data dissemination strategies. 

2000 NATIONAL POPULATION CENSUS BRANCH

The prime purpose of the Branch is  to coordinate activities of the 2000 National Population Census. The branch is managed by the Deputy Census Director whose responsibilities include working closely with the Census Director and the AusAID Census Management Team Advisor on the overall management of the 2000 National Population Census.

The branch has been suspended after the successful completion of the 2000 census and will be operational during the 2010 National Population Census.
